Summer Isn't Over Yet: Why We Love Late Summer in Virginia Beach
Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, but in Virginia Beach, there are still plenty of warm beach days, ocean breezes, and reasons to keep summer going.
For many places, Labor Day feels like a hard stop to summer.
The kids are back in school. Vacations are winding down. The beach chairs get packed away, and everyone starts thinking about sweaters, pumpkin spice, and shorter days.
But here in Virginia Beach, summer doesn't disappear when September arrives.
In fact, some of our favorite beach days are still ahead.
The water is warm, the sun is shining, and the biggest summer crowds begin to thin out. The boardwalk is still alive with activity, restaurants are still welcoming beachgoers, and there are plenty of events happening along the Oceanfront throughout September and into October.
For those of us who live here, late summer and early fall can be one of the best times of the year to enjoy Virginia Beach.
The Best Part? The Beach Is Still Calling
September in Virginia Beach can feel like summer with a little more breathing room.
The intense heat of July and August begins to ease, but there are still plenty of days that feel perfect for a morning walk on the beach, an afternoon in the sand, or an evening stroll along the boardwalk.
And with fewer tourists than the height of summer, you may find it easier to find a parking spot, grab a table at your favorite restaurant, or simply enjoy a little more space on the beach.
The official Virginia Beach tourism site describes fall as a season of milder temperatures and dwindling crowds, while still offering plenty of outdoor activities.
That's one of the things we love most about living here.
The beach doesn't go away. It just gets a little more peaceful.
Labor Day Weekend: One More Big Summer Celebration
Labor Day weekend may be the traditional farewell to summer, but the Virginia Beach Oceanfront certainly doesn't go quietly.
In 2026, the Super Girl Surf Festival takes place September 5–7, bringing women's surfing, wellness activities, entertainment, and plenty of energy to the Oceanfront. The event takes place along the beach and boardwalk from 2nd through 12th Streets.
It's a perfect example of why Labor Day in Virginia Beach feels less like the end of summer and more like one last great summer weekend.
September Is Still Full of Things to Do
Once Labor Day is over, the Oceanfront doesn't suddenly become quiet.
September has plenty happening, including the Fall Wine Festival September 11–12 and the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend September 25–27.
And the Neptune Festival is one of those Virginia Beach traditions that locals and visitors look forward to every year.
The Neptune Festival
If you've never experienced the Neptune Festival, September is a wonderful time to visit.
The 2026 Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend runs September 25–27, stretching along more than 30 blocks of the Oceanfront. The celebration includes live music, an art and craft show, food vendors, sand sculptures, athletic events, family activities, and much more.
One of our favorite parts is the Neptune Festival Art & Craft Show, where approximately 200 artists showcase their work along the boardwalk.
As a store that loves artisan craftsmanship and unique handmade treasures, that's particularly close to our hearts.
And of course, there's King Neptune himself standing watch over the Oceanfront.
October Brings a Different Kind of Beach Day
By October, the atmosphere changes.
The days are often comfortable and beautiful, the summer crowds have diminished, and the Oceanfront takes on a more relaxed rhythm.
You can still walk the beach.
You can still stroll the boardwalk.
You can still sit outside and listen to the waves.
And you can still have that unmistakable Virginia Beach feeling—just without the peak-season hustle.
October also brings some wonderful events to the Oceanfront.
Boardwalk Art Show
The Boardwalk Art Show takes place October 9–11, 2026, with artists displaying their work along the boardwalk from 24th through 37th Streets.
It's another wonderful opportunity to wander the Oceanfront, discover talented artists, enjoy the beach, and spend a beautiful fall weekend in Virginia Beach.
Wicked 10K
Then there's the Wicked 10K, scheduled for October 31, 2026. The race begins near the Virginia Beach Convention Center and finishes along the boardwalk.
So even Halloween brings a little Oceanfront excitement.
Some of the Best Beach Days Are in September and October
There's something special about an early fall beach day.
Maybe it's walking barefoot along the water without the intense summer heat.
Maybe it's sitting on the sand with a good book.
Maybe it's watching the sunrise before the boardwalk gets busy.
Or maybe it's simply having dinner near the Oceanfront and taking a walk afterward while the evening air turns cooler.
The Virginia Beach Boardwalk stretches for about three miles along the Oceanfront, making it easy to combine a beach day with walking, dining, shopping, and sightseeing.
And that's one of the things that makes this area special.
You don't have to choose between the beach and the fun. You can have both.

There's a rhythm to Virginia Beach that you start to appreciate when you live here.
Summer brings energy.
September brings a little more room to breathe.
October brings beautiful weather, interesting events, and a slower pace.
The tourists may be heading home, but we're still here enjoying the beach.
