How to Find Your Ring Size

A simple guide to finding the right fit

Finding your ring size doesn't have to be difficult! The most accurate way to determine your size is to have your finger professionally measured, but there are also a few simple ways to get a good estimate at home.

The Most Accurate Way: Get Professionally Sized

For the most reliable measurement, visit a jewelry store and have your finger professionally sized using a ring sizer. If you're in Virginia Beach, stop by BeJeweled! We're located just off Laskin Road in Hilltop North, and we'd be happy to measure your finger and help you determine your ring size.

If you're purchasing a ring as a gift and need to keep the surprise, you can also bring in a ring that fits the recipient well and have us measure it for you. Be sure the ring is worn on the same finger and hand where the new ring will be worn, since fingers can vary in size.

Measure a Ring You Already Own

If you have a ring that fits comfortably on the finger where you'll wear your new ring, you can use it to help determine your size.

  1. Place the ring on a flat surface.
  2. Measure the inside diameter of the ring from one inside edge straight across to the opposite inside edge.
  3. Measure in millimeters for the best accuracy.
  4. Compare your measurement with a ring size chart.

Be careful to measure the inside of the ring—not the outside edge.

Helpful Tip

Choose a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably. A ring worn on a different finger may be a different size.

Measure Your Finger at Home

If you don't have a ring to measure, you can use a narrow strip of paper.

  1. Wrap the paper around the base of your finger.
  2. Make sure it is snug but not tight.
  3. Mark the spot where the paper overlaps.
  4. Lay the paper flat and measure the length in millimeters.
  5. Compare your measurement with a ring size chart.

You can also use a piece of non-stretchy string, but paper can be easier to measure accurately.

Important: Don't pull the paper or string tightly around your finger. You want to measure your finger as it naturally fits inside a ring.

Tips for Getting the Best Fit

Measure When Your Hands Are Comfortable

Finger size can change with temperature. Cold hands may be smaller, while heat can cause fingers to swell. Try to measure when your hands are at a normal, comfortable temperature.

Measure Later in the Day

Our fingers can be slightly smaller in the morning and may swell throughout the day. Measuring later in the day can give you a better idea of your everyday ring size.

Measure the Correct Finger

Your fingers are not necessarily the same size on both hands. Always measure the specific finger where you plan to wear the ring.

Consider the Ring Width

A wide band can feel tighter than a narrow ring in the same size. If you're between sizes, a wider ring may feel more comfortable in the larger size.

Measure More Than Once

If you're measuring at home, take two or three measurements. If you get the same result each time, you're more likely to have an accurate measurement.

What If I'm Between Sizes?

If your measurement falls between two sizes, a half size may provide the best fit, when available.

Your ring should slide comfortably over your knuckle while fitting securely enough that it doesn't easily slip off.

Remember that comfort is important. A ring shouldn't feel painfully tight or leave a deep indentation around your finger.

Buying a Ring as a Gift?

Trying to determine someone's ring size without giving away the surprise?

Look for a ring they already wear on the same finger and hand. You can discreetly take it to a jeweler to have it measured.

You can also ask a close friend or family member if they happen to know the person's ring size.

Just remember: a ring worn on another finger may not be the same size.

Still Not Sure?

Don't worry! Ring sizing can be tricky, especially when shopping for a gift.

A Note About Ring Sizing

Every finger is unique, and ring fit can vary depending on the design, band width, finger shape, and even the time of day.

When in doubt, professional sizing is always your best option.
